November 5, 2024 – The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) expresses our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Retired Senator Murray Sinclair on his passing.
The Honourable Murray Sinclair has left a lasting impact on Canadians’ understanding of Truth and Reconciliation. Developed under his leadership as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the 94 Calls to Action continue to provide a path toward reconciliation and have helped guide the Institute’s efforts to support professional planners in building relationships with Indigenous peoples based on mutual respect, trust, and dialogue.
“Canada has lost a true champion of Indigenous rights whose lifelong work has acted as a guiding light on our journey toward reconciliation,” said Lesley Cabott, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. “The planning profession honours the Honourable Murray Sinclair’s wisdom and unwavering dedication to sharing the truth and the first step toward reconciliation. There is still much work to be done and as a profession committed to fostering inclusive and vibrant communities that are respectfully connected to the natural world–for the good of future generations–we are committed to doing that work.”
The Canadian Institute of Planners is dedicated to ensuring the legacy of the Honourable Murray Sinclair lives on through meaningful actions that strengthen the relationship between the planning profession and Indigenous peoples from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
