OTTAWA, Ontario – November 8, 2016 – The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is pleased to announce the winners of its 2016 Great Places in Canada contest. After a rigorous review process by a jury of certified planning professionals, the Institute bestows the title of 2016 Great Street on Water Street (in St. Andrews, New Brunswick), 2016 Great Neighbourhood on Woodfield (in London, Ontario), and 2016 Great Public Space on St. Patrick’s Island (in Calgary, Alberta).

In August, CIP invited Canadians to nominate a place in their community for the Great Places in Canada contest. The panel of jurors reviewed the 37 Great Place submissions from across Canada against a criteria of planning best practices that considered social, economic, and accessibility and safety factors, and elements such as design, culture history and landscape.

“CIP is pleased to recognize these great planned places on World Town Planning Day, an international day celebrating the accomplishments of planners and their contributions to their communities,” said Eleanor Mohammed RPP, MCIP, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners. “A great place is one where citizens can enjoy a healthy and inspiring environment. All of the 2016 Great Places in Canada winners are demonstrative of what planners try to create: a space that is functional, safe, and enjoyable for the community.”

In addition to inviting the public to nominate a space, CIP conducted an online vote allowing the public to determine what place they think should win. With over 30,000 votes cast, the public determined the 2016 People’s Choice winners, with Rothesay Common (in Rothesay, New Brunswick) voted as 2016 People’s Choice Public Space, Downtown Antigonish (in Antigonish, Nova Scotia) voted as 2016 People’s Choice Neighbourhood, and Historic Main Street (in Newmarket, Ontario) voted as 2016 People’s Choice Street.
