When you become a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), you join Canada’s largest network of planners and planning students – now 9,000+ strong! We are a member-based organization with management complemented by volunteers who support and contribute to our activities on various levels.

We work closely with Provincial and Territorial Institutes and Associations (PTIAs), which regulate the planning profession and govern the rights and responsibilities of their members, as well as the Professional Standards Board (PSB)(opens in a new tab) who administers the certification process of professional planners on behalf of the PTIAs.

Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP®)

Members of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP®) are actively engaged in the planning profession and are a Registered Professional Planner (RPP), Licensed Professional Planner (LPP), Urbaniste, or equivalent fully certified member residing in Canada.

To join CIP and use the MCIP title, you must be a member in good standing with a PTIA.

Candidate Member

Pre-Candidate Member

Pre-Candidates intend to become a Candidate member but do not yet qualify. This may include individuals who have a recognized planning degree and are not working in planning, as well as those without a recognized planning degree who have been working in planning for less than five years.

Retired Member

Student Member

American & Australian Professional Planners (APA or PIA)

International planners who are full members of the American Planning Association (APA) or Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) may apply to become an International member of the CIP and use the MCIP-I title. Please note that this does not grant legal registration to work and/or practice in Canada. Please refer to the Professional Standards Board to begin your certification.

International Member

Planners working outside of Canada are welcome to become CIP Public Subscribers. (See below for more details.)

If you are practicing planning outside of Canada and are interested in becoming a registered Canadian planner, please refer to the Professional Standards Board to begin your certification.
