Housing

Housing is a basic human need involving the complex use of resources. One of planners' central concerns is ensuring that housing promotes the physical, economic and social efficiency, health and well-being of urban and rural communities.

CIP and Canada's national housing agency, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), are cooperating to create sustainable communities and promote housing quality, affordability and choice nation-wide.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

CIP and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) are working together to promote housing quality, affordability and choice for Canadians. As Canada’s national housing agency, CMHC has a wealth of information that can help municipal officials achieve their housing goals. We encourage you to explore the CMHC website, which includes information on the following topics:

The National Housing Research Committee

CIP is also a member of the National Housing Research Committee (NHRC), which brings together representatives from all levels of government, social housing organizations and the housing industry, as well as academics and consumers. Its goals are:

  • Identifying priority areas for housing-related research and demonstration;
  • Encouraging cooperation and partnership in research without duplication of effort;
  • Fostering broader support for housing research; and
  • Promoting the dissemination, application and adoption of research results.

NHRC Working Groups

The NHRC directs various Working Groups dedicated to specific issues. These Working Groups focus on:

  • Distinct Needs
  • Housing Data
  • Homelessness
  • Sustainable Housing and Communities

Research and reports contained on the Working Group websites may be useful to planners across Canada.
